I think one important thing to note is it's a lot easier to ride over your head on an MX track compared to single track. At least that's been my experience here in the NE.

When the acm shows waiting for target on multi tool during your firmware update have you tried keying off and then on. When I have done firmware updates I have always had to key off and on each time to get it past the "waiting for target" phase
