No special tools needed, it is very easy, just loosen the 2 notched preload rings all the way, and it becomes obvious how to remove the spring seat. Like everything else, there are youtube videos.

Somebody told me I needed special tools (like a spring clamp or something).
But happy to know I can swap it myself.

I prefer such a clamp tool. Quite cheap on AliExpress. Used it myself.

Is it possible to unbolt the linkage and drop the spring out the bottom of the bike without removing the shock?

Probably yes, it's just 1000 times harder and a lott more work under very annoying angles.

Might be possible, but I wouldn't even try it...just remove it.
