Gummy tires? Tire recommendations?

I know one of the brand mousse's has a bouncier feel to them than the traditional ones that had a dead feeling I saw it on Slavin's racing you tube vid .
 
Today I pulled the mousse out of an Varg EX rear wheel with the Michelin 140/80-18 Medium. Now the Michelin got a lot of volume, usually more than the Metzeler, the mousse has a cross section circumference of ~310mm and says "made in Austria" on it so I assume it is an X-Grip EH2 - seems too small to be an EH3.

Now if you look at the Nitro mousse sizing table Fitment Chart Search, the same 18-325 is shown both for the Metzler and Michelin that can be chosen stock for the Varg. Nevertheless for the JXE 140/80-18 the smaller 18-305 mousse is recommended. What does this mean? Most likely your mousse will be a tad too big for the JXE, but you can always cut out a piece and save for later when the mousse is worn. Will it be a perfect fit - no, but with mousse you never know until you try!

Would cutting it possibly affect wheel balance? Could I achieve the same effect with drilling holes in the mousse? I'd prefer to get at least another tire out of this mousse before tossing it

IMO balance isn't a concern here with the knobby tires usually seriously imbalanced anyway and speeds low. And it is hard to exactly drill the holes. Cutting is easier and as I said you keep the part for later to get more life out of the mousse. Actually you can also save the drilled out bits and re-insert them later, but it is just way more of a hassle. Get the new Prolock 360 instead and be done with the mousse ;)

ProLock 360 isn't available until March 😞 but I am starting to warm up to the idea esp with a 5150 mousse. I don't like relying on air pressure
 
I'm about 15 hours in with an IRC GX20. I choose it for the FIM knobs (trying to go easy on home trails) and "medium" compound. I'm a big fan of the Ve-33s but wanted to try something different. So far, not very impressed. The compound feels extremely soft to me, not even in the same league as the 33s and softer even than an 81EX. It's good on rocks and roots, but we have a fair bit of flowy loam also on which this tire is crappy. Lack of acceleration and braking traction are the biggest gripe. We all know the stark is a spin machine, but this tire is much worse than the Michelin enduro medium 2 in that regard. I'll probably go back to the Michelin or try a mx tire next to see if the spin can be tamed. Yes, I realize it can be controlled in the right wrist, but this bike begs to be given the beans.
