Here is a video of it; I've watched it with the automatically translated subtitles:
@ 5:21 you can see it being recharged via a plug.
According to what I've read on non official websites, it uses Yamaha's SPHEV Series-Parallel Hybrid Electric Vehicle technology. From the way it's described in the video, it uses a parallel only technology, since it doesn't seem to me that the engine is used as a generator.
Here is that SPHEV applied to an XMAX scooter:
This bike also has the Y-AMT automatic gear shifter:

They describe the way it works like at a certain point the engine starts and it feels heart warming, like that's more exciting than an electric motor.
I expect the CP3 engine in the MT09 to be, just like other engines of that kind, powerful and reliable, so the logic that I applied when I chose the Varg, i.e. riding a lot more reducing the maintenance of a gas MX bike, wouldn't apply in this case.
Maybe if the battery has enough energy to do it, you could commute using only the electric engine saving on gasoline and, especially if the ride is short, you would avoid frequent engine cold starts and spending overall so much time in cold engine conditions.
What about hybrid mode, though? Won't the engine cool down when used intermittently and experience the same problem? Or maybe when it cools too much it's restarted automatically?
Personally, it's interesting but I would still stick to a gas bike for road use; let's see more details but so far I wouldn't be convinced if I wanted a road bike.
