The part that sticks into the vehicle is a larger "diameter". That determines the space required on the vehicle.

NACS is slightly larger than a normal gas pump nozzle. Maybe you mean CCS...

Has anyone tried to reverse engineer it? If it's standard like NACS you could probably just wire up an adapter and charge from tesla...

There is no reason not to have this. At worst it should just be a NACS/CCS adaptor.
