Update: I went out to the garage this morning to check on the bike and the battery didn't take a charge at all. I cycled the ignition and got a "Code 33 service soon" message on the dash. I was able to get it charging this time though. It took about 4.5 hours on the 110v charger. I rode it...

Butch, are you varying your map selection during those long rides? Or are you staying in, say, map 2?

If anyone remembers the company Vectrix, they produced electric scooters about 10 years ago and have been out of business for some time. They used the throttle rolling forward feature as engine braking and also reverse, so I'd imagine it could be done in the future on an Alta!
