Brand new varg drivetrain-chain noise

Not sure if this is normal, my brand new ex makes almost like a rattle noise off throttle coasting. It is worse with less regen. I’m guessing chain but cannot pinpoint it. Never owned an electric bike so some of the noise is new to me. Does anyone else’s bike sound like this? Hopefully this video works. Thanks.

Doesn’t make the noise on the stand and stark support is telling me to go to a dealer. Bike is brand new
I would get in contact with the nearest dealer and send them your video (and your VIN).
They may want you to bring in your bike before they contact Stark, but it would be nice if they could get something started immediately.

I didn’t buy from a dealer, just seems weird for a brand new bike to be messed up if it is.

First check that the chain is in tolerance for slack (they can be all over the place, mine was way to tight).

Then check the spocket guard for witness marks. That will give a good indication if its to loose.

Mine was also way to tight out of the crate, I set it to spec. Nothing seems to be wearing on the plastic slide parts weird. Trying to pinpoint the noise is difficult because it does not make it on the stand only riding it. And only off throttle coasting is when I notice. With regen turned up it is not very noticeable

It will do it with the bike off rolling down the driveway, which makes me hope it is just the chain. I’m going toy try and slip the chain off and see if the noise goes away. I’m just paranoid of a powertrain issue

It doesn't matter if you bought it from a dealer, Stark requires drive train (and battery) warranty replacements to be done by a dealer.
There have been other brand new bikes that needed repair.
If you are hesitant to follow Stark's instructions, perhaps you should ask them if they think the drive train needs to be replaced.

What you are hearing is caused by torque pulsations in the electric motor. When coasting with zero regen the _average_ motor torque will be zero. Ideally it should be continuously zero but in practice it will go from slightly positive to slightly negative to average zero. As a result opposite faces of the gears will touch as torque changes from positive to negative. That is why you hear it less with more regen or under throttle, because torque is always either positive or negative.

However, what I am hearing is too much. Damage to the gears could also conceivably cause it. Did you check that there is oil in it?

The best way to hear this noise on any varg is to remove the chain and then open the throttle a little bit so that the motor is doing between 1000 and 2000 RPM. You will hear a similar noise but it will not be so loud. But for your bike it seems too loud, like there is something wrong with either the motor or gears.

I will see what support has to say, I only was told to go to a dealer from the SAM chat. After checking out as much as I could Im pretty sure it’s chain noise. It makes the noise with the bike turned off just rolling down the driveway. Noise goes away with the chain off or bike with 35+ regen. From what we could see looks like chain slap on the bottom slider.

I changed the gear oil this morning it was clean. No noise from motor or gearbox when it’s on the stand.

Would the motor or gearbox still make the noise if the bike was off and coasting?

Motor and/or gearbox can do it with the bike off and rolling. Having it off excludes the electronics.

If it doesn't do it with the chain off I am probably wrong.

With the wheel in the air and the bike turned off spin it by hand and see if you feel any cogging.

I will double check again with the chain off the motor and see if I hear anything. Then I will also check for that what will cogging feel like? Like a tight spot?

Cogging will feel like like you are turning a big ratchet as you hear "click click". Cogging torque - Wikipedia

From the video it just doesn't sound like the chain is doing it, but i could be wrong.

This is the motor and gearbox with no chain on does this sound somewhat normal.

It’s really hard to tell it seems like the washer isn’t centered but the sprocket should be on a spline right? Should I pull that bolt and make sure nothing weird is going on.
That sounds OK to me. Are my eyes fooling me or is the front sprocket not perfectly centered?... hard to tell from the video.

My bike also made that noise, but only after I had been riding it for quite some time. I knew it was coming from the chain, I assumed it was because it was loose, but I think it was actually from it being too tight. I haven't really experimented enough with this, but I eventually replaced the chain and it was making the noise with the new chain, but after riding it for a while, the chain got loose and it stopped making the noise. I have a feeling this is related to their recent change in chain adjustment spec. The new spec is looser than the old spec. There was a thread on that recently.

I'm pretty lazy on the chain specs, I tend to just go by feel and not measure things, so I'm not the best person to quantify it, but the important thing is, I don't think the noise is a problem.
