EX w/ mousse

My EX came w/ mousses (LOVE that they do this!) and I'm now at 500 miles and the rear is getting pretty soft. On my last ride, a ton of mousse gel came out of (primarily one of) the rim sidewalls, which made me concerned the bead got unseated..

What I likely should have done, is clean the tire and just cranked down on the rim lock... but I thought it would be a good time to add a second rim lock, and possibly swap out the tire for winter (it gets REALLY slick here in PNW in the winter.. at least on the west side).

A few things I discovered:

1. there was still a TON of lube in there... more than I've ever seen (it got, everywhere...)
2. they install a nice "rim tape" inbetween the mousse and rim (why there was so much lube still, despite having an open hole in the rim)
3. the mousse actually looks really good!

A question:

Has anyone else had this happen? (I've run mousses for a long time, and never had the lube squirt out like that, past the rim)

Any concerns w/ using the original mousse, adding a second rim lock, and installing a new tire?

Thanks!varg tire.jpg

Have you used this more street miles than your other bikes? Mousses get really bloody hot on the street.

We see this often with bikes used in the Dutch OTR season where there are quite some fast asphalt sections (or people ride fast anyways). A lott of us stopped using mousses long ago since they pretty much melt and we have to replace them twice a season.

no street miles, but there have been a few fast sessions (short lived) on gravel roads..

again, the mousse actually looks fantastic, likely due to the amount of lube they use.. (more than I've ever seen)

I just swapped tires on mine at ~40hrs. Tire probably could have gone 10 more hours but the mousse had gotten way too soft for my liking. Like yours, it had a TON of lube and made a hell of a mess removing. It was in surprisingly good shape considering how it felt riding (like 3psi). I was curious about the brand , but the only marking I could see on it was "made in Austria". I went to a Bib, which I love because they are firmer than the nitros and last much longer. The ideal feel to me is a 10hr bib, and I've gotten as much as 100hrs of out them before (2 tire changes)!

Like others said, I have had that happen after some road miles, especially if you've just lubed it and spend much time above 45mph. Every six days of MI I've done my tires come back looking about like yours.

I agree Stark does a proper job with the rim strip and also the plugs they use on the spare rim hole (I just use a strip of electrical tape). Although my rim strip lost its adhesion, probably from all that damn lube, and I had to cut a piece out that detached after mounting the tire.
