let’s do this

I've always thought the Alta would make an awesome flat track machine, the massive torque at all times combined with the very precise throttle control, sounds like a super fun setup.

not too happy with my 5th place finish but i think i’m figuring this thing out

too much wheelspin on the start and difficult to control wheelspin on corner exits

ICE bikes are much more predictable and aggressive cornering is much more controllable. I can go way faster on my old 2008 ktm 450

either a software adjustment to the map is needed (since stock is designed for mx) or even better Traction Control! is any of this possible?

I figured out the same problem, when driving supermoto with the ALTA. The speed up rate on the rear wheel is too high, when the wheelspin begins. A constant drift like on my 450 CRF is not really possible. It would be possible to program that in the firmware, when they would allow it! We need the open firmware! Lets make a openpetition for our rights!

I dont think, that You can put the right amount of rearbrake at the same time when You accelerate, to smooth that down to the right amount of spin!? The advantage of the four stroke is the ability, to keep a certain acceleration rate and slip rate constant.

Do you guys use the SM firmware? There is very pronounced differences between the 4 maps in the SM firmware.
The mx/r ex/r maps are not that different from one another.
I highly recommend using the SM maps (I use it for my EX as well).

Obviously running in a lower map mode will greatly reduce the wheel spin. That being said, over time I’ve adjusted from my ICE bike’s to my Alta’s and have learned to slowly roll on the throttle and roll off the throttle for maximum acceleration and deceleration. I’m able to ride in map 4 and benefit from the strong power hits at high speeds, but don’t suffer the crazy wheel spin when coming out of corners or on take offs now that I’ve finally adjusted to the Alta’s characteristics and learned how to better manage throttle control. Before I figured out wrist control, I was spinning my rear tire all over the place, thinking I could just pin the Alta like a normal bike.

So on the start when the green flag drops - should I try map-1?
Not at all. I only run map 4 on my Alta’s. That being said, you cannot pin it like a normal ICE bike. What you need to do is practice finesse with the throttle. Run map 4 but slowly twist the throttle out of the hole. If you’re spinning too much, twist it slower. Enough practice and you’ll find there’s a sweet spot between perfect traction and wheel spin that will be just the maximum amount of acceleration you can achieve on the bike. Sure, you could put the bike in map 1 to reduce your wheel spin, but you’ll also reduce your speed out of the hole. It just takes some practice but you’ll eventually get used to it.

Four strokes have traditionally had a traction advantage simply due to the longer period between power pulses (compared to a two stroke). In between pulses the tire can regain grip if necessary. Tire manufactures have known this for a long time and have slowly optimized for the four stroke (among many other factors as well). The electric has no power pulses so one might conclude that it needs a tire that compliments this characteristic. Is there such a tire? Not to my knowledge. Until then you might be at a slight competitive disadvantage. Slowing the acceleration ramp rate somehow would also help.

Will practice my starts with a slower hand. Difficult to do when the adrenaline is pumping and the green flag drops. Next race August 8 in Perris. It would be great to see a few Alta's there!

I tried all maps. Not really good. I have the MXR maps on the bike. I cannot load the SM firmware on it, because i have the original ALTA laptop, which does not allow to change firmware from another bike!

i would make the effort, and get a Technician multitool laptop (sooner or later, you'll need it).
there is a speicific thread about it -
How-To : Install and Use Alta Multitool Software

it makes uploading SM maps super easy.

You are right. But I am not used to Linux at all and anxious about to remove all software from the dealer laptop (the only Linux Laptop I have) and install MT. What if it dos not work? But sooner or later I have to dare! :)
