Someone in Europe, who has a ALTA SM? Chargingissue!

Hi WWmotors,
I’m having problems with my SM in the US constantly having a ground fault stating “ AC ground not detected”. Does anybody on the forums have any idea how to remedy this problem? I bought the bike used with 400 miles approximately and it would intermittently have this issue. Now at 800 miles it is unable to charge and the battery is critically low. Anybody please help!
Hello Silenthorse, i never had a groundissue, only voltage out of range. Did You try an update? Sounds like the MXR error 103 problem to me!?

I tried 220 to 240 Volt (descrition above) and 120V. Only 120V did work with an inverter, because Germany has 240Volt net! I have to turn around sometimes the plug, because it works only in one direction.

A friend who’s an electrical engineer said the “A/C ground not detected” issue may be solved by watering your homes grounding rod or if your home is grounded through the foundation to add a 6 foot copper grounding rod and water it at dry times of the year. Anyone concur?

Sounds weird, but it totally makes sense.

I am not a safety expert, so I am wondering if urinating onto the grounding rod with potent electrolyte solutions would make it work even better?

Philip: I am applying potent electrolyte solutions to increase efficiency during electron transfer operations. So back off, man... I’m a scientist. <shakes and tucks>

Hello Silenthorse, I had that problem once: I turned around the 220V plug (in Germany You can put the plug eather way) and then it charged. Did You check the ground, wether it is really there at start and end of the cable? Checked different plugs in Your house?

It never worked out with 220-240 Volt. Then I bought an inverter from 240-> 120V, then it worked!
That's a pity. So no charging at public charging points then. That defeats the purpose of the internal charger in my opinion. Or did you find a relatively small backpack-sized inverter?

The inverter was nearly as heavy as the ALTA standard charger. So no way, to carry it with the bike! And with 120 V it takes forever (6 hours) to charge it. Way to long in my opinion. I sold the SM anyway already, but I keep my MXR and EXR.

Keep in mind the onboard charger is probably the least good bit of engineering on the whole bike because of the constraints we had.
Converted/upgraded one of my SMs to 220 with the dccp and rapid charger. Thanks 510! Riding with the pelican in the left hand makes it hard to operate the clutch so you have to keep it under 82mph on the rough tarmac. Bummer the rapid charger isn't a little smaller or lighter😉 and I agree judas. on board charger is weakest or only weak link I've found!

I told Rashid my #1 upgrade wish would be an IP67 HD color display and rear cam to delete the mirrors. The stock screen leaves a little to be desired but it's functional. Maybe a cheap flir like my blackview camera to see animals at night could help too. 🤔 If we all got together maybe someone could help us prototype? I'd pay $1k for a promodel🤑 ,maybe more if it was done real well. I know nothing about programming or engineering but backup cams at Costco are less than $100 just not IP67,68,69. I'm sure they'd do the trick for at least 5 minutes though.

My BMW definitely needs a Daemon like mirror delete. The mirrors are completely useless at some rev zones and i have to look hard to see anything that isn't about to rearend me!
