The "lock bike" feature isn't reliable

On your phone under settings, can't you go to "Network & internet" and disable the sim? I would disable it if you can, at least when riding, live updates while riding are dangerous.

On the MX the only connection between the bike and phone is bluetooth I am pretty sure, so you don't really need the cell connection anyway.

Then enable the sim when you want to updte or when safely parked. Maybe it is different on the EX?

I don't think it does update while the bike is in gear. Hard to say when it actually does, because I just noticed it when the power was suddenly missing on a hill climb and I found it had switched from advanced power modes back to basic and I then checked the version. Disabling the mobile connection would probably be an option, because what I'm really afraid of is, that the update bricks the bike like activating the lock feature when I'm out there in the nowhere ...

Yes the worry is that it seems to change settings that could effect the bike with no indication to the rider. Given what @vic321 said about the lock feature and what happened to him --I wouldn't use that feature and I would definitely disable the sim.

I have an MX-1 so my bike gets less public parking since its use is entirely offroad. Nevertheless, my first MX-1 got stolen via carry away and no internal bike lock would have done much. Most thieves are only deterred (if they are at all) by the bike being affixed to something immovable and a lock that will make bolt cutters impossible and angle grinders more work than they want to expend.

Seems like a new version every day now. 2.6.0 (66) was the one that fixed my lock bike feature , today it went to 2.6.1 (67).

This also shows on the home-screen now when you tab on the 'today' field.

Same here. It was on 2.6.0 yesterday, and today on 2.6.1
I played with the bike around 09:00, and couldn't access the power modes. Didn't think much of it at the time, but it's possible that's when it was updating.

I was out in the middle of no where, getting ready for a trail ride. I had forgot I had locked the bike with the phone the night previously, because I wanted to see if there was any difference with the updated app. It locked quickly and I was hopeful. But when I went to unlock it - same thing as before. I had to do it over and over and over and I was seriously starting to worry that it wasn't working because I had no cell phone reception. The "unlock bike" option was greyed out and I don't remember that being that way before.

But eventually it unlocked. I started carrying a lock with me and using that instead of messing with the phone. Hopefully some day they will get it more user friendly
