    Battery Energy State Hysteresis

Do we know for sure that you lose access to the energy? Does the bike shut down when the charge estimate reaches 0 or when the BMS detects the battery voltage is at the low cut-off point? If it's the former then you are correct, you are limiting your range by cycling the key. If it's the...

    Owner's Review 10 minute review

Based on your feeling, the Alta is providing a constant level of regen, not a constant rate of deceleration. The regen gets stronger as you slow because it takes less energy to slow down a slower moving object than a faster one. Since the amount of energy being recaptured by the bike stays the...

Regen is tricky. As @Fod said, the regen energy has to go somewhere. If it can't go into the battery the bike won't regen. All EVs have this issue. Electric car manufacturers have looked at adding a big heat sink (literally a large resistive heater like a toaster) or actually using battery...

240v female to 110v male adapter

With DC charging you don't need a charger on the bike at all. In fact, the bike needs to be wired to allow for the charger to be bypassed when using a DC charger. The problem is that the vehicle needs to be able to tell the charger how much juice to send at what voltage, when to taper the...

240v female to 110v male adapter

The 110V outlet is simple, the J1772 "car" plug not so much. You will need some electronics to send a specific signal to the EVSE (that's what the charging pedestal is called) to initiate electricity. Unless you have an SM you'll still need the charger to convert the AC from the EVSE into DC...

    charging complete?

Well, don't let it spoil a ride. You definitely need to let it sit and balance sometimes but not every time. You should have no qualms about halting it mid-charge or at the top of a charge. The BMS can handle it no problem - it takes numerous cycles to start getting out of balance and such...

    Handling fees?

Thanks for joining and for the info! In the car world, the factory pays the dealer a stipend for preparing the car and I've never paid it. Is it different in the motorcycle world?

    Speed and Firmware

There are regulations on this that state that the speedo may be high by as much as 10% but may not read low. I believe this causes manufactures to err on the high side so as to stay clear of the regulators. I had never thought about dual-sports spinning the rear tires causing additional excess...

    Father son bonding

Thanks for sharing! My son has a Kuberg Cross right now that he rides around our property. Hopefully I'll have an EX-R soon and we can learn to ride dirt together.

    Battery Energy State Hysteresis

I am not a battery engineer, just parroting things I've learned having Teslas for the last 8 years... Unlike other chemistries, Li-Ion batteries maintain a very flat voltage profile through a huge portion of their SOC (state of charge). That means voltage drops only when the battery is "nearly...

Interesting idea on the parking brake. Tesla's have a pawl, a small metal cylinder that is pushed by a solenoid into holes that are cut into one of the reduction gears. Shouldn't be that heavy to add, although it probably wouldn't be able to be retrofit into existing bikes. For those, the...

Speedometer/Odometer reads from motor shaft, NOT front wheel!!

Ah Mission Motors. I REALLY wanted one of those. I was able to ride one of the prototypes up on Skyline back in 2013. They still have my $1,000 deposit :muutt: I keep hoping someone will pick up the bones and make that bike. I will definitely buy one.

    Alta Fast charger

I am not an electrician, but I believe that code states that you can only run at 80% of breaker rating for continuous load. So 15A - 20% = 12A.

    Alta Fast charger

@Judaslefourbe was just saying that the Alta chargers don't comply w/ the J1772 signaling protocol. So you would need more than a plug adapter. You'd need something to generate the J1772 pilot signal, like you installed in your car. I'm surprised they didn't make the SM charger J1772 as there...

    Tesla pickup truck

It reminds me of that Freightliner pickup. Semi cab and pickup bed. I think it was mostly a design exercise and an attempt to move EVs away from the urban crowd and towards the pickup truck crowd. In that you could look 'down' from your EV at the dude in the F350 rolling coal. I think the...

    Handling fees?

Interesting discussion. I've never bought a motorcycle new. Is there wiggle room on Altas? I will be in the market for an EX-R soon. Should I be prepared to haggle or stick with MSRP+tax and govt fees (or is even that not done)? The last car I bought from a dealer was a Corvette in 2005 and...

    Regen in different maps?!

Yes, SOC=State of Charge. Lack of regen at full charge is common to all EVs and can be surprising to people that are new to EVs since ICE engine braking doesn't change based on how much fuel is in the tank  It's also common to limit regen when the battery is cold.

Thanks for the input! I've been a road-racer and road-racing instructor for 20 years (hence the avatar) but all this dirt stuff is new to me. I've only spent 4 hours on a dirt bike and that ended with 2 cracked ribs :cautious: Once I get a dirt bike I'm planning on doing some private lessons...

Charging strategies for long battery life?

Hi everyone. Speaking from Tesla experience here - not an Alta owner yet. Yes, 50% is ideal for long term storage - that provides the least amount of time-based degredation. Do Alta's have a storage mode where you can leave it plugged in and it will hold 50%? As for charging to 100% and...

Thanks @Philip! That makes sense to me. So then, assuming you had a "perfect" throttle hand, the only real difference between maps is regen.
