    Fog getting some air

I don't doubt the starts, the Alta has an advantage at altitude for sure.

Yes, over five years now. I worked for Hughes Space Communications (now Boeing Satellite Systems) for 30 years before retiring at 55.

    Owner's Review Technical Review

I've been sitting on this for almost 8 months and figured why not share it with the members. It's my personal assessment of my 2017 Alta MX (remember, it was written before the 18s were even announced). This installment is mostly from an engineers perspective. I have an equal but as of now...

An Open Petition to Alta to let us create our own maps (and to modify Map 3)

To safely create your own power and throttle response maps (they are typically two independent tables) you really need to be intimate with the strengths and weaknesses of the entire drive system. Without this, you'd be probably just as likely to create maps that do more harm than good. I don't...

Suspension exchange between Alta and KTM?

The Trax mechanism is designed to get the rear wheel back to the ground (when it's unloaded) as fast as possible. This works well in the whoops as you can get good drive. However, under braking when the rear is very light the faster rebound allows the rear to jack up compared to the front...

    The Alta Factory LHRB

Not sure what he was driving at but you can't take a front caliper (left hand) and flip it to use on the back (right hand). Everything's backwards.

Warnings on dashboard on new MXR

Unless Alta bought a shipload of 18650 cells (which would be great for cost but bad for performance as better cells get released all the time) I suspect they'll have "pack S/N specific" updates. They'll need to optimize each batch of packs for the specific chemistry used in those specific lots...

Change in the way Alta is advertising torque

It doesn't matter what the motor is "rated" at, it's how they map the motor controller. The only way to determine that is on the dyno as Phil demonstrated.

Ty Tremaine and Lyndon Poskitt to race in the Erzberg Rodeo

No doubt, this is true. Extreme Enduros are getting very popular. I'd just prefer to read about current owners and members of this very forum (wherever they live) entering and completing local "non extreme" Enduros/races without battery concerns before I read about ANYONE finishing the ER...

Suspension exchange between Alta and KTM?

Note, I noticed that the triple clamps on my 17 were quite soft. Not sure if it was the material, heat treat, etc. They just seemed to flex a lot and would stretch when tightening the pinch bolts (even to stock torque specs). I'd be curious if Alta changed the clamps for the MXR. If not, one...

Suspension exchange between Alta and KTM?

48mm CVs should work with the stock triples (mine are 52mm CVs as opposed to the standard 48mm CVs). Not sure about the rear shock on the MXR. The TRAX shock will fit but it takes some grinding on the frame around the top mount. My 17 used the 490mm length shock. Not sure what the new MXR...

Ty Tremaine and Lyndon Poskitt to race in the Erzberg Rodeo

It wasn't until the last 10 years that anyone stateside even heard of the ER, mostly due to Taddy and of course Red Bull. Ask your typical demographic buyer about the race and who won and I'd say less than 10% would have any knowledge and of those probably less than 1% would say it influences...

    Holy 14T - Sweet Spot!

I did some quick calculations one day and figured a full battery has about the same "relative" energy as about 3/4 gal of gas. I was allowing the Alta major efficiency numbers so 3/4 might be high depending how you ride.

Ty Tremaine and Lyndon Poskitt to race in the Erzberg Rodeo

Nine production. I figured Alta wouldn't waste all the money it must have taken to field a team at ER without some getting some marketing play. From a bike perspective it was mainly battery, battery and battery. Getting the right map(s) to go the pace without overheating the pack seemed to be...

Ty Tremaine and Lyndon Poskitt to race in the Erzberg Rodeo

Since the introduction over a year ago, the Alta has again and again proven itself to be a solid, reliable and capable motorcycle in every venue it's entered. The measuring stick for this has nothing to do with gas vs electric, it's simply "does it break"? The answer is NO, even in the hands...

Ty Tremaine and Lyndon Poskitt to race in the Erzberg Rodeo

Maybe it's just me (you think?), but I'd suggest that Alta first learn how to walk before they choose to run with the big dogs. I think there's plenty of evidence that shows the bikes is already capable of competing with the best gas bikes available. I don't think anyone doubts it's ability...

    Spare Battery Pack

Finally got the word from my dealer. No spare packs are available. Alta simply doesn't have any just sitting on the shelfs. Warrantee and outright failures are the only exception and you'll need to return your original pack so they can re-purpose whatever parts are salvageable.

    Owner's Review Ten Hour Review

I tried 110 and 120 and ended up with a 100! I found that too much traction in the rear made the bike push coming out of corners. Without a clutch to get the back end to come around it just didn't want to rotate mid corner (typical 1st/2nd gear 450 corners) with the big meats.

    Holy 14T - Sweet Spot!

Power is power. If takes so much work to move your bike at a specific rate and gearing can't directly change that. What gearing can do, however, is move the bike (motor) into a operating condition where it is more efficient most of the time. Without extensive dyno time where efficiency as...

    Ohlins steering damper fits nicely

Dynamically, if your forks have a tendency to pack and your rear shock has a tendency to jack, yes, you'll run out of effective trail pretty quick. The fix is to counter these tendencies with the adjustments available (assuming your suspension is in the ball park to start with). Reducing...
