    Chain Slider failures

Next time I have my shock off (happens almost weekly) I'll run my wheel through its travel and see if/how the chain interferes with the front guide. Obviously it's suppose to touch, but it's how and where it makes contact that important. Chain slap is another factor I'll look at. I'm not...

    Water in the rear subframe

I noticed this the first week I had my bike. I mentioned it to Alta back when but apparently their using the same revision plastic on the new bikes. There's several weep holes throughout the various cavities, none seem to work very well. I just cleaned the transition between the rear fender...

    Ohlins steering damper fits nicely

I loved the way Ohlin integrates their dampers, very clean and allows standard height bars in most cases. I had one on my RMZ450 and just couldn't get the feeling I wanted. Although it has high/low speed adjustments, it lack the variable sweep function of the Scotts. For me that meant the...

Ty Tremaine and Lyndon Poskitt to race in the Erzberg Rodeo

The Formula EV series' got this stuff down pat. Those guys can calculate almost down to the track section when they'll run out of juice! Of course, they have onboard telemetry constantly updating their discharge models in the pits. I'm surprised Alta didn't try to use some basic telemetry via...

I had to ride an ICE bike this weekend

The other day when we had my battery pack out of my bike I kinda had a wishful moment. As I wheeled my bike around the garage it occurred to me that this is what my old 06 YZ125 weight felt like ready to ride! I immediately started looking at Craigslist for used 125s.

Coolant Pump... not running with ignition on

Dealers are only as good as the people working there. It's tough to get knowledgeable technicians, particularly when it comes to electronics. Yes, they have access to "dealer only" diagnostic tools but as the saying goes GIGO. I'll bet the dealer was just as frustrated (with Alta apparently)...

Coolant Pump... not running with ignition on

It's just a simple single speed motor! There's no logic other than "is the key on, if so close the pump relay". if Alta can't figure it out I can think of a few ways to work around it.

Clarification on standard vs. rapid chargers

Phil, Ok, here's one. . . . . . . . NOT! This is actually out of my E-bike pack. I'm sure the Alta looks pretty similar plus fancy PCBs, interconnects, heatsinks and of course 12X more cells!

Clarification on standard vs. rapid chargers

Not having a service manual (again) is very disappointing news. Assign an engineer and just crank it out! Back in the day I'd write repair manuals for Haynes Automotive Publications in my spare time. It'd only take me about a week to fully revise or a couple weeks to fully re-write a manual...

Clarification on standard vs. rapid chargers

I wonder what the original 2017 charger is rated at? When compared to the new versions it (my 2017) charger looks significantly more robust (better heatsink, beefier construction, bigger, etc).

    Accessories available at MotoMinded

I'm reading that many owners want the best of both worlds. Great tractor like low end with enough top end speed to ride down the freeway. I gotta tell you, the Alta is good but it has limitations. Can you crank in 100 amps at almost zero motor rpm? Probably. Do you want to? I wouldn't...

Best Map for least sensitive throttle.

In general, max Torque/HP dyno tests are performed at WOT as would be expected. If you just want motor rpm at specific throttle openings (the load should be kept steady) it's not difficult to get ball park numbers. Just mark your throttle grip and clamshells at 1/8, 1/4, etc. Run down a level...

Best Map for least sensitive throttle.

You need to realize that the most difficult motor mode to control is very low speeds. The controller needs to know the rotor angle just like your ICE bike needs to know the crank angle, only much more accurately. At zero and very low rotor rpm the exact angle is difficult to determine and...

First AMA race on the MXR

Yep, folks have been "icing down" Alta battery packs between motos since they were released. It's probably not very effective at getting heat out of the core of the pack and all it takes is one sensor showing overtempt to shut things down. It's better than nothing, however. I'd like to see a...

First AMA race on the MXR

Fog 25. Thanks for the data point. However, you reinforce my argument. Right now, the thermal limiting issue on the Alta MXR is still very much rider, track, and "at gate" operating condition (temps/voltages/etc) dependent. With any ICE bike designated for MX you can almost guarantee the...

    Chain Slider failures

Yep, mine broke the same way. Noticed it several weeks ago. Strange failure, maybe the chain hits it when the suspension is fully compressed. If I were to guess I'd say the part was installed with residual tension and it's just a matter of time. I've also broken the rear chain guide as well...

First AMA race on the MXR

Hey Marc, haven't talked in awhile, hope everything is well. However, with all due respect (and not the "Ricky Bobby" kind of due respect), I'll need to see it first this time before I spend full retail again on a new MXR. I can't invest the kind of money (bike, suspension, testing, etc,)...

First AMA race on the MXR

That's cool. I know the bike can win in the Vet classes but it's nice to see it do well in the more competitive (faster) classes as well. I've been begging Alta to sell me a MXR at cost (can't afford another big depreciation hit like on my 17) so I can sponsor some young "A" level talent...

    Front Fender Slap

Mounting a late model KTM/Husky to the Alta lower triple isn't easy. First, you'll need to relocate the rear fender holes to allow the fender to fit flush against the front of the clamp. Put some grease around the holes on the triple and carefully place the fender in place to transfer the...

    Front Fender Slap

Frankly, you can put just about any front fender on if you want to drill a few holes and/or fab a little sheet metal bracket. You'll probably need to buy the corresponding front number plate as well as most nestle together. I think there's a conversion kit for early model KTMs (same as Alta's)...
