    Questions from a potential owner

It's called the SilentHawk - Popular Science did an article on it last year. Gotta love a motorcycle that can run on jet fuel. :) Ray

    Questions from a potential owner

Having lived through the Aermacchi & AMF periods, I think Harley and dirt bikes are kind of like oil and water... :) Maybe most here have seen it already, but if not, check out one of the pre-Redshift models: Ray

    Low coolant in new MXR

The thing is... unlike every liquid-cooled ICE bike I've seen, the Alta pump is up high and moves coolant primarily by suction rather than pressure. This setup increases the likelihood of coolant cavitation and foaming, which in turn can lead to poor heat transfer, boiling, etc. IMO it's...

Insurance and Titling in the US

Oded - in the United States, MC registration/insurance laws depend on the individual states, and vary a lot. In CT where I live, AFAIK electric motorcycles are still considered 'scooters' (< 49cc) and don't need to be registered at all (don't know about insurance). Ray

    Low coolant in new MXR

OK, I see it... the three dots / 'More options' / 'Edit thread' in the upper RH corner. Thanks! Ray

    Low coolant in new MXR

Thanks to all for the help! I added @ 29ml of coolant with a 10ml syringe, after which the level was just visible down at the bend of the coolant passage (as per the manual). I then replaced the cap and ran the pump; unlike earlier, this time the frothing cavitation noise quickly changed to...

    Low coolant in new MXR

I loosened the drain plug (USA 3/8" hex, on the main bulkhead casting above the RH swingarm bearing area) and a few drops of green coolant came out, so there's at least some in there now. Can I just top it up, or do I really need the filling items above? When will I know when the filling...

    Low coolant in new MXR

Thanks for those part numbers - I'll add them to my current order in progress. Will loosening the drain plug 'break siphon' (or whatever the term is) and start the pump cavitating during refill? I ask because a fill procedure requiring a sealed funnel entry, clamped-off vent hose, & pump...

    Low coolant in new MXR

Thanks very much for this info, I really appreciate it. No, no coolant spillage at all. I haven't actually ridden the bike yet, only turned it on briefly. OK, that's good to know. A couple questions... is the fill adaptor shown on page 75 on the manual actually available at the Alta website...

    Motor warning due to overheat

Thanks, I missed that - manual p. 27, 750 ml Prestone 50/50 ethylene glycol coolant or equivalent. I turned my bike on once, didn't like the pump sound, and turned it off again. I specifically asked HVM that no one ride it there and the tires look absolutely perfect , so hopefully it's...

    Low coolant in new MXR

I just checked my MXR's coolant level after reading Oded's recent overheating post, and as far as I can tell my bike is bone-dry (no coolant 6" down fill pipe). According to the manual coolant filling takes about an hour, so maybe with the new bikes/prices the assembly line got busy and this...

    Motor warning due to overheat

I'm sorry to hear of your problem, but I am SO glad you posted this right away! My coolant pump seemed noisy in the garage, like it was running dry - and guess what? It WAS !! There was no coolant level visible with the plug removed as the manual indicated, so I ran a wire 150mm / 6" down the...

    European/Australian generators

The Powerwall is the very quietest of AC power generators (this one is @ 7kW/h, 44 x 29 x 5"). What a cool thing to have on the wall of a bike van. Ray

    2018 Alta MXR Shock Re-Spring and Re-Valve

I imagine there's plenty of aftermarket springs available, but in case you need to roll your own to dial it in perfectly, Cannon Racecraft makes excellent ones to order, for a decent price (this one's a 48 x 203, $140): http://i399.photobucket.com/albums/pp74/rayivers/Shock-Spring.jpg Ray

    European/Australian generators

I'm sure you already know this, but electric start adds significantly to the weight - nice to have, though - and an inverter to the price (and really isn't needed for powering a battery charger). I wish Tesla made a reasonably-priced small Powerwall... $6K is a bit steep. Ray

    MXR Kickstand

If you remove the foot / cut a bit off the end of the arm / foot back on, that should work (the arm hole is very deep). I'd use a heat gun on the arm end to get the foot out, keeping the heat away from the foot as much as possible (the plastic will get soft & might break off the foot 'stem'...

    European/Australian generators

Some of those generators look very compact! A generator that only produces one high voltage will nearly always be smaller than one that also needs to produce a lower voltage at the same power level, but yeah, this country is not the place to look for them. :) For driving an Alta charger, the...

    European/Australian generators

The only thing I'd change in your post would be to substitute 'Neutral/Ground' for the USA 0V connection. If only 240VAC is being used in a USA 240V device there's no AC current flow through the Neutral/Ground wire, but if there's also 120V usage (like a clothes dryer's blower & drum motors)...

Thanks, glad to help! I agree 100% about Alta progressing & improving, and I think they've done a great job so far. Ray
