A little bit about my 2008 YZ250F Electric Conversion

Wanted to check in here! I'm almost finished with a design for a reduction gearbox that will bolt up to the ME1304 (and all other motors that are like this one...). With a 2:1 reduction ahead of the drive sprocket the motor can produce the same amount of torque with half the amperage, this is key to getting in/out of corners without generating tons of heat. The frames of the modern bikes just cannot accommodate a direct drive motor without sacrificing slider wear and having a massive single reduction. Here is a quick snapshot, I don't have the cover piece designed yet - will likely finish that up this evening! This reducer/motor mount could very well be SSE's first product I would be comfortable offering for sale! It is tight, but it all fits on the current YZ450F frame (not shown is connecting weldment/bushing to swingarm pivot). SSE450AReduction.jpg

That is very well done.

Sort of like the Alta gearing arrangement but much more compact.

it would be awesome to have a universal version where the final bolt points could be drilled for different frames.

what are you thinking it will sell for.

I haven't thought that far into it yet to put a price on it... I think a somewhat universal version would be pretty easy to do!

Here are some pictures of the gear reduction on the QS138 70H V3. Just for information. I am thinking of using this motor for a Husqvarna 65 conversion. It looks very robust for 15KW power. The ME1304 has some major torque.( I rode my buddies ECRF last weekend with ME1304 and it felt good with ASI BAC8000, but not Alta mod3 power yet) I like the bearings on both side of both gears. The web site these pics came from show the technology of the rotor in the QS motor compared to Tesla rotor. (Converting Off-Road Motorcycles to Electric with a QS motor)

I do see "Kelly 8080I..." to me that's significantly more embarassing than any pron hehe. I think QS has taken a step in the right direction with the reduction but the continuous power still makes it useless for us who ride 450cc and want that power. The ME1304 is pretty tame on torque in my opinion hence the need for lots of reduction. Continuous power is good on it though!

Yea, I am thru with the Kelly. I am tired of it. It is history. My buddies ECRF felt so much better than my Kelly. About the same power, but smooth delivery and NO cutouts. I cannot live with that.
Did you look at that article, the inerts of the QS motor look real promising. Maybe we can convince them to build a larger one with the gear reduction. Tesla rotor/motor design looks like the way to go. I think the Hawk motors have that technology in them.

It would be nice if the motor manufacture offered a gearbox option so you don’t have put all this effort to build one yourself.

...you aren't kidding. I had a conversation with the manufacturer about doing an integrated box - got a tooling price, but I couldn't get them to give me a piece price and minimum order quantity... I've started conversations with another supplier about doing the gearbox by itself, will require a pretty significant investment. I think if they could be priced at 500-600 bucks there would be a lot of buyers.

Yes if the integrated gear box was relatively affordable ebike conversions would be a lot easier, probably a pretty good market for the manufacture.

Great job Dain. I know how much wok that is. I wish, like you say if we could get one manufactured, and available for 500-600 bucks. That would make builds easier.
In the last 5 -6 weeks I built this from scratch. A KX100 Pit bike with a QS138 70H V3 gear reduced motor. What a blast to ride. 72V 210A.
here are a few shots of it. I built it all including the battery in 6 weeks with the help of Electro & Company (ElectroBraap)
Check this out, I don't know how long the motor will last, but "Mighte MX" is using this same motor but is pushing it to almost 400A with a BAC8000
My little pit bike at 200A rocks for a pit bike...

We gotta do a battle of the electric pit bikes! My KTM 85 Supermini is probably as fast as my Alta but it's so short I can't keep the front end down, lol. It's as light as I can build it and it's still heavy, 125cc bike heavy. But then again, other than the wheels and frame it's got full size bike suspension, brakes, controls, etc, plus water cooled battery and controller (ASI8000).

I'm wondering if two votol 150s controllers might work on a split stator motor. I guess you can modify the shunt inside and trick it into dumping more amps. i think they might be voltage limited though. cheaper to experiment with...

I just bought the IXXAT tool from Digikey for $343 plus tax and shipping $373 total. I just got it and have not got the DVT software yet . I will report once I test it. I am working on a 2014 YZ with the ME1115 motor in a billet gear box, and Sevcon.

I just bought the IXXAT tool from Digikey for $343 plus tax and shipping $373 total. I just got it and have not got the DVT software yet . I will report once I test it. I am working on a 2014 YZ with the ME1115 motor in a billet gear box, and Sevcon.

@DonCox did you also buy the CAN Isolator? 1.04.0075.03000 HMS Networks | Connectors, Interconnects | DigiKey

(Helps with CAN noise and also any issues between the computer and Sevcon) - I run these all the time at work

The owner came and pick up his KX100. He loved it. It's heading up to No Cal. It will be at Hollister in no time. The picture on the back of the RV is of The Over Forty Club at Hollister, and the bike going home.
