STARK VARG (Something new is coming!)

Here is a freeride E battery change in 15 seconds: Why don't you just buy one of those? It fits your criteria very well. From a major manufacturer so low risk and battery can be quickly changed... Note that the battery is up very high. A quick change battery in an MX bike can be done...

STARK VARG (Something new is coming!)

We are indeed making an effort. The design choices may seem unconventional but there are good reasons behind them. Another reason for these design choices is that this truly is clean sheet project. As for battery hot swap -- that would have compromised the bike in certain ways. Some people would...

STARK VARG (Something new is coming!)

The CEO (Anton) and CTO (Paul) both ride. The Alta was bought early on so that they could ride it and understand the differences of an electric drive train vs ICE on a motocross bike. The Alta was aimed at 250F, the Varg at 450F. Sure, there was some comparison early on, but the two bikes aren't...

STARK VARG (Something new is coming!)

The Yamaha and Honda e-bikes used frames designed for ICE. They cannot be competitive unless they abandon this approach and develop frames designed specifically for an electric drive train. I suppose they know this, but it takes real commitment to design from the ground up for electric. If you...

Terrific - but will it be effective off-road ?

We don't need a (rear) wheel sensor. There is a rotor position/velocity sensor on the motor. Since there is a fixed ratio between the motor and wheel we know wheel position and velocity -- except for chain slop. In short, no need for an additional sensor as this functionality is already present.

Terrific - but will it be effective off-road ?

Do not assume the Alta (or Varg) with a clutch will behave anything like an ICE bike with a clutch. When you have rotating mass there is potential energy that you can then transfer to the wheel using the clutch. There is very little rotating mass in the Alta (or Varg). So now we need a flywheel...

Terrific - but will it be effective off-road ?

IMO, four fixed "maps" is not enough to cover motocross, off-road, etc. We identified this as a weakness which needs to be addressed. The virtual flywheel in the Varg will be more advanced than what the Alta has. The end user will have fine grained control over the flywheel parameters...

New ALTA Alternative -Stark VARG - From Europe

I don't know enough about all of the mechanical aspects to comment on that, so I won't. As far as the electrical connections, everything on the battery is via connector. If you look at the 16 minute video at time stamp 6:26 you can see the battery and motor/inverter on the table. You can see...

New ALTA Alternative -Stark VARG - From Europe

I am the most senior guy on the team that designed the motor, inverter, battery. I won't tell anything that cannot be gleaned from the 16 minute video (battery layout shown in CAD as well as actual battery case shown, motor shown and stated to be 9kg). From this it is obvious that it is not the...

STARK VARG (Something new is coming!)

Let me clear a few things up. The motor was designed in house. It is bigger and heavier (9kg) than the Alta motor, but it is more efficient under load. Being more efficient is just like adding cells, so that offsets the weight. Also, the inverter (also designed in house) is both higher power...

New ALTA Alternative -Stark VARG - From Europe

It is not a fukata. It was not designed by "dissecting" a fukata. I suppose you came to this conclusion by looking at the cooling channels; your conclusion is wrong. Motor and inverter design is in house and closely coordinated. The motor is bigger and heavier (9kg), but is more efficient under...

No, it is not the motor in the Alta :)

STARK VARG (Something new is coming!)

For those who don't like the weight distribution of the Alta (front heavy) the Varg addresses that issue. That will not change with production bikes. Tortelli is heavily involved in the frame/chassis -- goal was to fix the weight distribution and make it feel more like a typical ICE bike. That...
