Doubt you have to worry about battery heaters. Batteries will discharge down to -25C so about -12F, and they generate heat when discharging. The problem with cold is charging, but you would probably generate enough heat during a full discharge cycle to be ok on charging and the software will...
Good catch, especially since they are virtually right next door to Alta. Here is what their website says about their work in transportation (I changed the text color):
Railroad Industry Radio Communications and Camera Systems
Vehicle Automatic Train Controls (VATC)
MUX Antenna Potted Cable...
Highly probably, but we, or at least I, tend to discharge my bike to a lower charge level than I do my electric car so that may hurt the battery life in my Alta. I also notice the shelf life comment in there about lithium batteries losing about 0.35% of capacity a year when sitting on the...
Not a real big problem doing that. You just need the right skill set. I have been on the periphery of people doing that to electric cars. Sniff out the CAN traffic on a working bike, figure out what digital code/traffic means and program a small device (arduino with a CAN shield) to either...
CAN generly uses a 9 pin connector, but only uses 4 of the 9 pins. Pin 2, CAN low. Pin 3, Grd. Pin 7, CAN high. Pin 9, V+ Pins may vary depending on the connector, but just about any 4 pin connector could be used.
The manual says the Alta will refuse to charge if the temp is below freezing. The manual also states it will refuse regen if the battery is full. I would assume that the battery will also refuse regen if it is below freezing, but the manual doesn't specifically address that.
Interesting observation, but it probably means that Alta didn't have the display custom made for them. If they did why would they put a check engine light on it? Probably came from something else, we just need to figure out what.
I wonder if you could use a inrush current limiter to limit the inrush current and keep the circuit happy while still using the circuit for something other than the light bulb?
I am not too worried about that. My bike is stored in my barn so the battery was around 40 when I left and it was above freezing during the ride. Lithium cells can normally be discharged to around -25C but charging is limited to 0C and the batteries create heat as you discharge. You are...
That would sucko_O, better you than me. Need to get studded tires for that. Getting stuck in stuff like that is one of the reasons I have the LHRB though. Awesome to be able to keep your feet down and still use the rear brake. Anymore I try and turn around before I get in stuff like that...
Took the bike out today, little snow, but in a normal year this area would be closed and there would be 6" to 2 feet of snow here. Decided to turn around when the dirt road started getting icy. Ice is something I don't play around with on two wheels, not worth going down just to go a few miles...
I took that as the board had Alta printed on it which is different from the display or individual components on the board being propitiatory Alta. From what I saw in the pictures the display is removable, and if you can find a replacement, maybe replaceable. It depends if there is any...
If someone has a display that no longer works we can pull in apart to see if the display is replaceable. I wouldn't want to try it on a display that still functions enough to allow the bike to operate, as it may not operate after the display is removed, but for one that doesn't work we can...
Probably. First I am not an expert in this. I have done some work/studying with CAN on EV conversions, but I am not a programmer. I also don't know how the Alta is configured. Everything here is an educated guess. CAN does have a 120Ω termination requirement. Not sure what would happen to...
If your bike is still operational, I would leave it alone. The control unit/display is required for the bike to operate and if you mess with it to fix the display you may inadvertently break the control unit part of the device and leave the bike non operational. If the bike is not...
