    Battery Pack Disassembled (Frustrating Weekend)

Alta has some smart people. I'm sure they've done tons of R&D. However, it ultimately comes down to satisfying specific in-house performance goals at a certain price. The process results in lots of compromises in the production units. Whatever I do they've probably already thought about and...

    Battery Pack Disassembled (Frustrating Weekend)

Had a frustrating race weekend recently. The event was the TWMX "Slam Fest" at Milestone Raceway here in Socal. An event tailored made for the Alta as it's basically a 5 lap dash for cash. Lots of big time players typically show up and it was loaded this year. Mike and Jeff Alessi, Tyler...

    The Alta Factory LHRB

I can email the IGES file to whoever can print it out. I've got to find it first! I had a hard drive go south on me recently but I'm pretty sure it wasn't the one with that file (I hope).

Has anyone measured their bike weight?

I measured mine (17 MX) and got a bit over 135lbs at each end. I used my racecar corner weight scales and used some known weights to verify accuracy in that range. Could be off a few lbs, however. My bike was not completely stock.

    External Charger Fault???!!!

There's another thread that addresses issues that cause a generator to pop (without apparent cause) the ground fault system on the charger. Check it out.

    Unresponsive motorcycle

There's got to be a quick "reboot" process. When in doubt, unplug the darn thing. I mean really turn the power off to the control modules by removing the harness connectors (including the main and aux power connectors on the battery pack). That might get it to work.

    Error: Service Required Pos Weld

Ok, it all makes sense now!

    Error: Service Required Pos Weld

The description sounds like some sort of short in the battery or inverter. At least Alta should tell you what POS means!!!

Alta and Nate Adams Make X Games History

Man, I used to follow the X-Games pretty closely and I didn't even know they already started! I'm getting too old.

    Triple Clamps Alternatives

I mentioned the stretching and deformation issues to the folks at Alta last year. I heard it from a pretty reliable source that they changed from 6061 to 7075 on the new models (mine was a 17). I figured that would fix the issue but maybe I got bad intel. My fix was to just change clamps (KTM).

    New Battery Tech

swatdoc. Yes, coatings, paints and other surface treatments have a role to play for sure. However, I suspect that the battery pack thermal bottlenecks are not radiator surface area related for now. Thinking about the thermal load path I'd guess the two biggest problems are getting heat from...

    Coolant leaked?

That's the vent for the coolant system. Don't know why they don't route the hose all the way down so it doesn't puke all over the battery. I thought the pressurized system of the 18s did away with all that? It must have been pretty hot!

How many want to keep the foot brake?

I've gotten so comfortable with my LHRB that I can't even ride a bike with ONLY a standard foot pedal. I'll come into a corner and don't even think about the foot brake and can't stop! Now the panic mode is at the bars. When I focused on using the foot pedal I realized just how imprecise and...

    New Battery Tech

Yes, this darn heatwave puts the bike in a hole right for the start. If it wasn't totally illegal I'd strap a can of refrigerant to my rear subsection and route a multiple manifolded capillary tube to the battery pack, placing an exit between each cell module/heatsink. Just make sure the pack...

    New Battery Tech

Don't know for certain, I've got some guesses based on the configuration of the cap but that's it. Regardless, I think they're probably 10A continuous. The R packs are probably 15A or better. Until I get one out and bench test it I won't know for sure. I've used TECs for cooling my...

    New Battery Tech

Not as built (shorts!). However, I've considered putting in fittings for some LN2!!!! If properly distributed it could cool the pack while charging. The only weight hit would be for the tubing, nozzles and venting of the distribution circuits, not unlike a NOS system for your hot rod...

    New Battery Tech

I think I've figured out a process for replacing the cells in the Alta pack. It's a tedious process of carefully cutting the PCB hard wires and then re-spot welding (or soldering) the cut leads back together using a splice wire, but it's possible without disturbing the surface welds to the PCB...

    Inverter Throttle Fault

I twisted my throttle back and everything was fine. Haven't heard from my dealer on my 17, but as far as I'm concerned "if it ain't broke don't fix it"! I haven't even changed out the passenger Takata airbag on 458 as I don't want some dealer to rip my dash out as I know it'll rattle and...

EXR stalled out (throttle not doing anything)

I'm sure the data log will show the anomaly. I wish Alta would publish a list of faults that can cause total shutdown.

    Inverter Throttle Fault

One of the intended consequences of OBD1 and 2 was to level the playing field between small independent repair shops/mechanics (us) and large dealerships with respect to access to the same data stored in the various onboard control modules making emission related troubleshooting and repair much...
