I would have expected a 150 or 160.
At least here in Italy, but I bet in France and in many other countries, too, the vehicle registration certificate lists the allowed tyre sizes and usually there is more than one; hopefully, they allow bigger tyres to be used.
They also use a 4.5" rim according to the Cycle World's article, which is a smart choice IMO. I tried a Michelin Power Pure 2CT on a 4.25" rim years ago and I liked it; I thought that probably a 4.5" rim would have still fitted without problems and would have worked better...

On Stark's site they have written that the SM shares the same frame of the MX 1.2.

Good article, though I believe that the freedom to omit ABS for the EU is down to the bike being homologated as L3E-A1 'light motorcycle <125cc'; dual sport isn't even a vehicle class.
ETA: they could be right, just named it oddly. There are indeed vehicle classes for Enduro- and Trial motorcycles, which are exempt from mandatory ABS:

Because the motorcycle is street legal, not only does the bike come with a charging stand similar to the units included with the MX and EX, but it also comes with a 3.3kWh portable charger that fits in a backpack and works in a normal AC outlet or Level 2 charging station ..

While the SM is shown on the charging stand in some Stark images, Stark never mentions that it comes with TWO chargers; only ever mentions the portable charger. Also, any relation between street legality and charger type doesn't make sense: the street legal EX comes with the charging stand, the SM comes with the portable charger instead.
 
if the geometry didn‘t change the 140 will be the only one allowed.
i put a 150 into my ex and there is a (too) small gap to the chain.
a 160 will be to much for the authorities.
 
EU law doesn't make a difference between "Dual Sport" or any other bike. The big difference is it being a 1 person instead of allowing a passenger.
1 person bikes don't need to have ABS (the only mandatory item of the above list) by law. There are other than Enduro or Dual Sport bikes that also allow to be sold without having ABS.

Edit: I have a 160 rear tyre. It is so wide sometimes it makes contact with the chain. No way an OEM is selling that from the factory.
 
I don't know about the EX or the MX 1.2, but I've measured the triple clamp offset of my MX 1.0 to be 22 mm.
Here they say that the SM clamps have an offset of 16 mm:
It also looks to me that the SM axle lug has a smaller offset, too.
@rs911: in another thread, you mentioned the idea to buy an SM and convert it to a knobby tyres bike and you also said that you like the SM clamps: be aware of this.

Yes, like we can see @9:30 in this other video, indeed there are only two pinch bolts on the right side and none on the left side. Apparently, there is a threaded insert, presumably made up of steel, in the left axle lug and the thread of the axle mates directly with it, so there is no axle nut either. I'll wait to see some testing from users to be sure but to me it looks like a smart idea: less parts, quicker installing and removal of the wheel, less fasteners that can loosen because of vibrations (remember that the wheels are unsprung) and same functionality. Maybe we will see the same solution in the next MX and EX versions.

 
That's quite commonly used on multiple bikes. Also the CRF-L. Somehow that setup tends to get out of alignment faster in a crash orvrockbashing, can't say i like it.
Matters less for an SM offcourse.

Agreed, not a fan.
I have the same style on my Fantic Sumo and as the treads are quite course (comparatively) I've found water/muck to get in which make it a real PITA to get the wheel off.
 
I love the fact that, like us, most Stark owners like to pay attention to every little detail in an attempt to make a better bike.
 
does anyone know if mounting SM wheels from third party on the EX violated the warranty? AI SAM cant tell me that information and i want to ask here first before asking them, since they have a lot of open tickets right now.
