Getting ready for preemptive power outages here in Nor Cal because of high fire danger. Pretty unprecedented response to moderate winds. But I guess once you have a few towns disappear in flames, you tend to overreact.

Planning to use the convenient USB charging port on the Sur-ron to power a few devices. How come the Alta didn’t get that handy feature? Would be nice in this situation to be able to use that big-ass battery to quietly power a few devices.

I had been considering picking up a generator to charge the bikes, but didn’t pull the trigger fast enough to get one in time for the power outages this week. Yes, I am stupid.

OK, this is interesting. Did not know Segway was the largest shareholder of Sur-ron. At first I thought this was just a blatant Light Bee knock-off. But maybe some improvements coming. Will be interesting to see how they improve them, or if there will be a Segway versioned Storm Bee. Or versions with Segway gyroscopes that won't tip over and won't need a (too long or too short) kickstand!

Looks like they have some cool riding places there. The little light bee handles itself quite well too.

Yes, these guys have been posting vids for years on TT, member Torturechambers, and now member hawaiidirtrider, they ride some insane terrain, this vid is actually one of their more mellow ones. :)

And yes, the Sur Ron's are doing great, hawaiidirtrider said a bunch of them got Sur Ron's and aren't riding their ICE bikes much, if at all. Sounds familiar.

I wonder how people feel about these bikes on mountain bike trails. By people I mean park rangers and mountain bicyclists.

I haven't heard of a single instance where they've been welcomed. Lots of hostility towards them out there, even from the street & commuter bicycle crowd, many have a strange resentment towards them. Similar to the ICE motorcycle crowds hostility towards e-motorcycles. Very strange IMO.

This has been largely my experience too. The e-moto's have received a polarized reaction, people are either totally enamored with them, or think they are the dumbest idea ever. No middle ground it seems.

Personally I am against E-bikes on Mountainbike trails. Even the modified mountain bikes. They tend to dig it up more and it ruins the trails for mountain biking. I can only speak for NY trails. For the most part, mountain bikes won't spin the wheel and dig in too deep whereas I have seen assisted bikes spin the wheel, in particular, trying to get over roots or up hills or on sharp turns and it rips up the ground more. Also, part of the fun of mountain biking is it physically demanding. I think there should be some joint trails for both and some non-assisted only trails to give everyone the opportunity to do what they like.

I am with Matt on this one. I know in my area an organized group of mountain bike enthusiasts hand build and maintain some nice trail systems and bottom line is all E-bikes are going to cause more damage to these trails, so I can understand a certain degree of conflict between the two groups. Even if most people use them responsibly, there will always be someone who ruins it for everyone.

joke's on you :) it ships with pedals, annoying EU-mandated brake-lever throttle-cutoffs and a "limiter" wire (which you can make the informed decision to cut) in order to get in under the radar of "e-bike" regulations, particularly in the EU. once you cut those and remove the pedals, the stock Sur-Ron X does 75km/h (and of course at that point it's your legal responsibility to get it registered / licensed if you use it on-road).

we're doing an ASI BAC4000 "upgrade" kit that will take that easily to *110* km/h (68 mph). the acceleration is scary / awesome as hell :) we do have a video of our friend _not_ wiping out from a 5 metre drop, however this one's funnier:

yeah i can confirm this. we went out with two sur-rons, they look like e-MTBs, and went through a wooded park on the way to a well-known dirt track with lots of jumps. in 5 minutes crossing through the park we met three people: *every single one of them* called the police to complain that "Motorised Dirt Bikes" were driving through the woods! *Four* Cruisers turned up, listening for that buzzing-bee 2-stroke sound.... dead silence :)

the Sur-Ron falls into that strange category that's neither a MTB nor a Motorcycle, and despite the brakes etc. being Shimano Downhill parts, MTB shops are wary of it ("ooo it's electric" and there's that familiar sucking-of-teeth sound...) garages won't touch it because they can't make money on the parts and labour: it's too "simple" for them, stuff doesn't wear out as quick.

e-bikes are in a weird category, all of their own - i love them :)

i own a stock surron. its a weird little bike.

it absolutely needs wider wheels, better tires, better fork, better brakes and a 4kwh battery and a better controller (I have almost none of these items), and to be geared down. but these would be expensive mods, like $4k at least.

if the surron had all the above mods, on a tight technical trail ie a trail where on a ICE bike you never leave 2nd/3rd, i do not think it would be possible to run the trail faster than the surron, and it will be way less tiring than on an ICE bike.

Ive been having too much fun on my Surron.

They are accepted, so far, in the full bike size event; took it to one Enduro and one Hard Enduro race (I wont race my MXR there cos I love it too much... hahaha)

Anyway, I came in 1st in a 1hr Enduro and 3rd in a C class Hard Enduro (4th in the event's prologue)

Your bike looks stock except for thr fork and tires correct?

Imagine how much faster you would have been with all the upgrades I mentioned above.
