    Tire mini-reviews

The following are brief impressions of various tires I've used since going electric in 2014. I'd almost given up finding a favorite rear tire, but I finally did - the F & R tires directly below are my go-to's now. I ride about 50% rocky-rooty single track, 20% hardpack, 10% loam, 10% shallow...

    Front Axle sizes

According to my notes, my AER uses a 22mm OD axle.

    $10 mini taillight

OK, thanks, that's great to know. For some reason I thought there was also a minimum-power requirement.

    $10 mini taillight

I didn't hook up either the head or tail lights, they're just for show. Afaik there's no way to connect them to the MXR harness, and even if there was I believe the Alta current-sensing circuits wouldn't like the taillight LED's.

    $10 mini taillight

There's been a lot of road work here recently, and I find myself crawling past local police at least once a week. A few asked about the bike's lack of license plate (in CT it's still regarded a 'scooter', no problem), but one guy mentioned that it should still have lights. He was right - I'd...

Rear wheel alignment setup & results

Hey, you're welcome, Philip - and thanks for the kind words! It's great to finally have some independent verification of the swingarm chain adjustments, which turned out to be about 8% off ! Hopefully the +.5-on-left compensation applies to all Altas, fingers crossed.

    Alta Marketing Material for Museum

The New England Motorcycle Museum in Rockville, CT is pretty cool too - check out all the Harleys :) Just kidding - it's dirt-bike heaven. The web site's not that great, here's the Facebook link. I've been there pre-restoration, they were still working on the floors. They also buy and sell...

Rear wheel alignment setup & results

Didn't really know which category to put this one in, but here's another super-complex machining project from Rancho Ray! :) I did this one years ago for my Zero, finally got around to adapting it to the Alta (the tubes are straight within .002", my camera not so much): You won't need to...

    Better braking

Wow, that sounds fun & scary at the same time! Maybe that super-quick & powerful response is just what's needed to slow down quick in the 170 - 190mph speed range. I wonder if a foam or rubber tube pushed onto the lever to add a little softness would've helped, at least a little? Have you...

    Better braking

Sure, no problem! I get a little wordy sometimes, but I'm a big believer in TMI. :)

    Better braking

Front Caliper Replacement (2 x 28mm pistons) Instead of the big rotor, I went with big caliper pistons - wow, what a difference! I used a Brembo 22.7610.00 2x28mm caliper (KTM p/n 59013015101, used on the '09 250XC-F and many others). Apparently Andrew Short used this with a 10mm master...

Flow DV shock mods / revalve and the 'Ӧhlins experience'

I put my bike on the stand to check out my new RW alignment jig (I'll post about it soon, works well) with the front end down, and a small amount of oil that apparently had collected under the shock end cap dripped out. :( The shock only leaks in extension, not on the kickstand or during...

    Better braking

The rear edge (highest point) of my pedal tip is even with the top of the lower frame tube. I'm 5'11" with unusually long legs, and my riding position on a stock bike is normally the basic 'jockey crouch', with feet aimed near the F tire contact patch. Since I can't really point them down much...

    Better braking

I'll never forget the first time I saw an Alta up close - a '17 MX, at Town & Country Cycle in Hamburg, NJ. I was really impressed - the quality ! fit & finish! components! - and this was all before the test ride. :) The Brembo stuff looked great, and the brake pedal had plenty of clearance to...

AER revalve #2 and 'air-to-air' conversion

Yes - my favorite are slightly-recessed manhole covers. On my bike's fork I can't feel the initial drop-off and get just a mellow medium-range bump on the far edge. The rear is the same initially, but the far edge is harsher as my swingarm's nearly horizontal now and the impact's trying to...

AER revalve #2 and 'air-to-air' conversion

I got the top-out spring situation squared away on both sides, ending up with the 25mm-shorter fork I wanted: The LH spring & bumper had to be reduced in OD to fit the Race Tech unit's ID, the RH worked fine as-is. Not a trace of topping out now, even with increased air pressure. The LH...

    Front Fork Question

This is one of 2 seals I got recently (price is for 1 seal). I wanted the heavier-duty version for what I'm doing with my AER, but you may want the standard type with perhaps a bit less stiction.

Bike no longer saving log files?

Any chance the laptop & bike file dates don't match up? Maybe if the laptop or its files had incorrect/weird dates, MT might not recognize the bike files as new (just a guess).
