Very happy with my Varg as well. I won't be able to decide until I go through the motions of price spread next spring (EX vs what I can get for my Varg). Only at that point can I do the calculations. Plus we'll know more about battery adaptability. Honestly, with a spread of $4,000 - $6,000 between what my near-new will be worth and the EX, I can do a lot of updates, even with factory parts. Stark seems to price things well. My must-have upgrades can easily be done to my Varg (suspension, handguards, brake disc guards, better chain guide). All the better if the EX disc guards and chain guide will work (haven't heard yet). I already did tubes and tires. I would love the other updates, but none are a must since I don't really plan to ride street.

Thinking through the other updates, these are the "Like to have but not must haves":
Head/tail/brake lights: Mainly for visibility on the trails when meeting oncoming users or indicating braking to followers. And the occasional planned, or unplanned, night ride. There are some options for this aftermarket. Even if one bought the EX number plate with light, rear fender with light, and updates switches housing, the issue with retrofitting EX to MX will likely be powering these things once installed. That is probably something the new harness accommodates but not the old.

Horn: Nice to notify others of a need to pass. Same issues as lights.

Bigger battery: Always welcome, and would allow me to finish rides with a higher SOC and/or backup range and so be less hard on the battery than draining it down so far.

Offroad specific chassis flex: This is probably one of those "I want it because it is a thing" rather than something I could definitely feel at a recreational level, but I'm all for anything that softens the ride above and beyond suspension mods.

Updated kickstand: My short one has worked fine as I can always find a rock/stick to put under it, turn the bike so kickstand is uphill, or lean against a tree.
Power settings and custom curves: Nice but have found current Varg does all I need.

New harness: Value in it it being next gen design and less prone to water ingress, but only time will tell if that is a problem with my current. I mostly ride dry/dusty, not water/mud. Can probably avoid issues by being careful on washing technique (but that is TBD).

New phone/cradle: Current one has worked fine so far, but if new phone and cradle are more crash resistant, that is a plus.

More than likely, my must haves can be done for about $2,000. Then the questions is, if the price spread is $4,000 - $6,000 vs me selling and buying EX, subtract $2,000 for must have modes, and the spread is $2,000 - $4,000 above and beyond that. For me, if EX cost me $2,000 out of pocket more than modifying current Varg, I'd do it as the cumulative value of all those nice-to-haves is greater than that. If it's $4,000 more out of pocket than modifying current Varg, then not enough value to make it worth it to me. Oh, I still want those features, but wouldn't do it.

There is also the unknowns of update reliability/early adopter of new systems, but I would think these updates would be less problematic than those with creating an entirely new bike, so lower likelihood.

So that is my thought process. Won't know my personal direction until spring when I see value of used bike vs cost of new EX. I'll wait to do any mods to my Varg until I know. If the spread is too great, I'll just do the must-have mods I mentioned earlier and keep my current Varg. Either way (keeping and modding current or buying EX), I feel fine about. Both options are waaaaaay better than not having either. Ha. If you wait until the "next great version" or "next manufacturers" bike, you'll never buy anything.

I agree with you, very happy with mine especially after my suspension revalve and setup for my weight , changed my tubes and I have a headlight which I will either change for the ex one or just get the stock number plate and adapt an led to it … mine runs of a separate battery and it has been done by the dealer to be able to make it road legal… also the tailligh is running from that. i suspec that to swap for the new bike i would loose 2k at plus what I have spent on the mods I have and don’t think its worth it … would run until the warranty runs out and swap for a new one then maybe …

Great point regarding waiting until the warranty runs out on current bike as there is value in that as well.

It’s official… I have a gray varg MX for sale (and a 2019 zero fxs) and am expecting a new varg EX in my garage on March 3 :) can’t wait, hope the stupid stalk blinkers needed for the US are held on by duct tape or something so i can rip them off first thing and just use the number plate integrated ones. Also will be removing the foot brake as i live in a state that has pretty relaxed standards (headlight, brakelight, horn, blinkers are optional, dinky little mirror is a plus in case of ornery cops and you’re good to go). Got some warp9 SM rims and pirelli scorpions for the street, will throw the stocks back on for the dirt. So stoked!!
@tymck7 Keep the foot brake and add the hand brake with a Clark adapter mind works great. Just get the left hand master cylinder and stock hydraulic line and have shortened up.

Still assuming that the EX uses P50Bs, here are the datasheets of the two cell types:
P50B
P45B
Some interesting improvements:
• Maximum charge current before 70°C cutoff: from 13.5 A to 25 A: if there will be fast chargers, I guess the 50s should charge faster.
• Minimum charging temperatures is 0°C for 45s and -20°C for 50s. the minimum charging temperature allowed for the MX Varg is 4°C: can the EX be charged at lower temperatures maybe? I wonder. There is still no manual for it.

For Europe if you order a Varg EX today and choose "pay now" estimated delivery is February 10th.
If you just pay the 299 € pre-order fee, delivery date is May 19th.
They are enticing customers to pay in full, it could also be a way to stock dealers first, which makes sense for a brand new model, it needs to be seen at dealers and available for demo rides.

So about 2 months if you pay up front or 4 months if you just "reserve" your Varg EX.

80 hp Varg is in stock so 7 days delivery but if you wish to have 60 hp (or kickstand!) then delivery is pushed back to February 12th (not worth it for a sub-par kickstand 😆). The option to just pay 100€ to reserve it seems to have disappeared, online it's pay all or nothing, though I think you might be able to avoid this by ordering through a dealer?

Good catch, as I've posted in the previous page, for me one of the most impressive improvements is in cell capacity retention, 80% capacity after 750 cycles would be 1500 h (assuming 2 h enduro range).

Is it confirmed that they are using the P50?

Nope, but it also took a while to see official confirmation they were using P45B.
I am pretty confident they're using P50B because Stark have a partnership with Molicel, because these are the most advanced Molicel cells for this kind of applications and because P50B have been available for about 1 year (at the beginning in very limited numbers). More information when the Varg EX will be released, such as battery configuration, number of cells, total voltage, will help to confirm it.

I hate to burst anyone's bubble, but the range isn't going to be very significant. Now, maybe it goes from about 30 miles to 40 miles of offroad (and that's a pretty tall maybe), which, of course there's no gripe in more range. But I wouldn't exactly go selling the farm to switch to one of these.

I've mentioned it in a few places that I own an Alta EXR and had it plated for the first year of ownership. But all street riding halted pretty quickly when you realize you can't go anywhere on it. I knew it's limitations and I thought the idea of legal plates would be a lot more useful than it turned out to be. Maybe your situation is different than mine and you have a really short ride to get places where you live. But if you're in a more rural setting, then you're better off with a quiet gas bike.

Yes even 40 miles could be on the limit depending on terrain and rider, here's the range in Stark enduro vid
Beginner got 50 km, 3h03 (average speed 16 km/h)
Amateur 53 km, 2h19 (23 km/h)
Pro (Taddy) 42 km, 1h18 (32 km/h)

Ofc that was with he Varg, not Varg EX.

Since they've posted full onboard vid you can see how much it compares to your riding (from average speed as well).
It's not really dual sport unless you ride real close from your place, it's more for enduro out of your van or short commute to go buy some bread (a bit overkill 😆).

I get 50 miles currently, so I’m hoping for 60. Just my realistic numbers

I've got 40 miles on mine with about 20 miles on the road and that drains a lot especially since 16 miles have been done with 40 mph constant speed.
I think 50 miles of purely off road is doable as long as it's technical with speeds less than 30 mph.

Yeah, i was actually pleasantly surprised. But yeah, average of about 25 mph sounds right. I’m not too hardcore, 60 miles is enough for me. And if i can use it to commute 15 miles each way with very little freeway… that satisfies basically all riding i do..

80 hp (peak power) Varg EX legal to ride with A1 license (125cc license) in Europe, or even just driver license in some countries, all thanks to continuous power being rated at 9 kW (12 hp), that's the fastest 125 ever 🤣

I was more used to seeing continuous power to peak power ratio at 1:2 or 1:3 of peak power but here it's 1:6.66 !?

This is all good for sales of bikes but I can see it quickly backfiring on the company if they don’t limit the power in software to what the legal requirement is … someone with no experience on 80hp is a dangerous thing ! Or did I not understand this correctly?

No, it's all perfectly legal, no shenanigans coming from Stark.

A1 license allows to ride motorcycles up to 11 kW (15 hp) and 125cc. In some countries driver licence will automatically grant you A1 license (some require 1 day training).

The thing is, this power limitation of 11 kW is continuous power (amount of power the motor is capable of sustaining continuously for 30 minutes, according to UNECE regulation No 85). For ICE, continuous and max power are more or less the same, but for electrics max power can be much higher than continuous power.

Zero motorcycles have been selling A1 motorcycles for some years (60 hp peak power, 15 hp continuous power). I thought a ratio of continous to peak power 1:4 was already high, not sure why it can vary so much between motors but for the Varg it's 1:6.66 !

Agreed someone with no experience nor proper motorcycle license on a 80 hp is a recipe for disaster, probably even more off-road. Stupid, but legal!

Shouldn’t the HP go up along with the range?
With any given battery capacity, the more HP you use, the LESS range you will have.
If you set your Stark for 10HP max, it will go a lot farther than if it's set for 60 or 80.
All Stark Vargs that exist today (built as MX bikes) have the same battery and motor and they are software limited to either 60 or 80HP.
Yes, there is a second generation inverter, but that is not a factor in max HP.

I’m talking about the new batteries in the enduro model. How does range increase 20% without the max hp also going up?
