Unless I'm seeing it wrong, I believe that's what he's showing. The white (neutral wire) is used, but it's now the other "hot" wire. The neutral terminal of the 240v plug is essentially dead and connects to nothing.

My experience has been as long as you have control of your right hand and not constantly blowing off the rear tire, than any differences in range is minor. I pretty much use 4 all the time now unless there is a low traction situation.
